This first photo I took while at an artistic collective party thing, or at least that's what I was told I was going to. I had images of a bunch of hipsters getting together to share ideas and network over a some drinks and Cajun food. What actually happened was I found myself thrust into more of a smooze fest put on by one or two video producers who wanted to sell their mediocre rap acts and low budget exploitation films. Oh and the drinks were over priced and the food was crap. All in all it was kind of a let down. The only plus side was that it offered me a chance to play around with taking photos in a low lit club where the only way to get "quality" shots would be to have a really kick ass flash (which I do not own). The problem with flash photography though is that, when done wrongly, your subjects tend to be washed out and flat. Sure that is fine if you want to post photos on Facebook or have some shots of your friends doing silly drunken things but what if you wanted to do something artsy? Or accidental?

The best option you have, when shooting in hopeless situations like a bar, is open the aperture as much as possible and either pick a decent speed or set the speed to bulb. More light will come in but the exposure will be longer and you risk over exposing your film, so you should play around a bit. Oh and it would also be nice to have something steady to shoot off of be it a bar stool, a tripod or your knee. I like my knee personally. I know where it has been, most of the time and it will always be there for me (unless it gets bitten off by a shark or stolen by gypsies).

Or you could just ignore going for steadiness and move the camera all around and get messed up shots like the one above. This, my friends, is what I love playing with. The photo above I took while at a friend's jazz gig, I was worried that the photos I was taken were going to all be crappy (which some were) so again I figured I would at least try having some fun with picking a long exposure and moving the camera around while the shutter was open.
The way you move the camera about dictates how the streaks of light turn out, and I'm sure if I actually had the patience and the talent I could get some awesome well designed patterns to emerge but again I thrive in chaos and chaos isn't all that patient.

Though sometimes nature has a way of playing with the lights itself. The shot above I have no explanation for. It was raining and late at night and my camera was acting up. I think it was due to several poor choices in shooting this street shot that I came away with a weird shot that pretty much captures my feeling about letting mistakes happen. Sure you could view all of the photos above as mistakes on several levels. I took most of them not knowing what the hell was going to be the end result but there in lies the beauty of life itself. We can only plan so far into the future and even if we plan things out meticulously something is still bound to go wrong. It is easy to get stressed out when things happen unexpectedly, it also is easy to just look at the mistakes in our lives in a negative view. I find it much more rewarding to do the opposite. It is not just the old "make lemonaid" saying, it is the very taking ownership of what life throws at you. So a photo of mine turns up weird, well by nature I am a weird person and I think these photos, which I have the most fun working with, are the ones that capture my personality the best.
And on that note I will head once more into the void of the Internet, to return some other day with more odd photos and random musings. Take care kids.
